Harvesting of oil crops 2017

In Ukraine, in the 2017/18 marketing year, the production of such a crop as sunflower is extremely unsuccessful. In comparison with the last marketing year, the average yield of sunflower fell from 13% to 20% according to different data.

According to analysts, with the harvesting progressing, the predictions for sunflower yield continue to deteriorate. Thus, the latest data show that the average yield of a crop in Ukraine has decreased from 21.5 centners per hectare to 18.7 centners per hectare, and, consequently, the predictions of gross harvest of corn in Ukraine fell by 600 thousand tons.

At the same time, Kernel, the largest exporter of sunflower oil and a supplier of oilseeds, said that over the past three years, the sunflower harvest has grown by 89%. This result was achieved thanks to the introduction of new technologies in the process of growing sunflower. So, for example, they changed the technology of applying fertilizers to the soil, as a result of which the efficiency increased by 70%.

It should be added that in Europe and the world, the harvest of sunflower can be considered satisfactory, due to favorable weather conditions. And yet, the world’s sunflower stocks are still small.

The oilseed crop in 2017 caused various reactions in the market. On the one hand, a record soybean harvest was obtained in Ukraine, which amounted to about 4 million tons. On the other hand, the sunflower harvest decreased by 8% compared to last year.

Thus, soybean prices in the market remained stable, while sunflower prices fluctuated and rose by 20% in September 2017. Fluctuations in prices for oilseeds were also noted on the world market, which were associated with changes in exchange rates and seasonal factors.

Today, the oilseeds market continues to develop and attract investors. Forecasts for the coming years show that demand for oilseeds will increase, especially due to increased consumption of oil and biofuels. Therefore, the yield of oilseeds remains a hot topic for agricultural producers and investors.
