Ukrainian Parliament voted against cancelling the ban on the land trading

The Verkhovna Rada considered the decision to cancel the ban on the agricultural land trading, which was introduced by several deputies. Only 81 deputies voted for cancelling the ban of the sale of land, while it is required to have 226 votes to introduce a new law.

Such a decision of the Parliament means that now the President of Ukraine can sign a ban on the sale of agricultural land. After the vote, the law will be sent for signature by the Speaker of Parliament.

This law on the extension of the ban on the sale of land was adopted on December 20 last year.

Also, according to a survey conducted by the Institute of Agrarian Economics, today only 10% of Ukrainians are ready to sell their land.

This survey was conducted among 3 thousand owners of land plots for agricultural needs.

On January 18, 2019, the Ukrainian parliament voted against lifting the moratorium on land sales. The moratorium had been introduced in 2002 and had been in effect for over 15 years. Opponents of lifting the moratorium argued that it could lead to the concentration of land resources in the hands of large agricultural companies and foreign investors, which would have a negative impact on small and medium-sized farms. However, supporters of lifting the moratorium believe that it is necessary to attract investment and develop agriculture in Ukraine. They also argue that the introduction of free circulation of land will help fight corruption and increase the efficiency of land use. After the vote against lifting the moratorium, a special working group was created to develop a law on land use in Ukraine.
