Ukraine and Russia are the main suppliers of sunflower oil worldwide

The Ukrainian and Russian markets are experiencing difficulties due to high demand domestically and abroad, with insufficient supply. Ukraine is in the first place for growing sunflower, Russia has has been taking the second place for a long time, although it has more acreage sown with sunflower.

In 2019, the production of sunflower in Ukrainre reached 16.5 million tons, the production of sunflower in Russia reached 15.3 million tons, and in Argentina and Romania it amounted to 3.3 million tons (these countries occupy the third place).

Over the past 10 years, the cultivation of sunflower has increased significantly worldwide. Romania is the leader in growth (the volume of sunflower cultivation increased by 3 times).

Between the beginning of autumn 2019 and the beginning of summer 2020, Russia exported almost 30% more sunflower oil than during the corresponding period of the previous season, which amounted to almost 2.5 million tons. The export of sunflower seeds increased almost by 6 times (1.14 million tons), and the export of sunflower meal also increased by almost 30%, which is about 1.5 million tons.

The export volume of crude sunflower oil from Ukraine increased by almost 25% (5.22 million tons, last season it was 4.2 million tons). The export shipments hit the record in April 2020 and reached 720 thousand tons.

Export estimates of Ukrainian crude oil are kept at a high level due to constantly high external demand and tight supply. There are a lot of buyers of Ukrainian sunflower oil, which cannot be said about the number of sellers.
