Due to adverse weather conditions, sowing of winter wheat in Kazakhstan proceeded slowly
In the regions where winter wheat is cultivated, a rather warm weather is observed with temperatures as low as -7 at night and little precipitations, here and there exceeding the norm.
According to information from experts, due to such conditions, the finishing of the harvest and the preparation of fields for sowing of winter wheat was delayed.
However, despite such conditions, the state of winter wheat is assessed as excellent, good and in some regions as satisfactory.
Also, depending on the region, winter wheat is at different stages of ripening – from germination to tillering.
Moreover, in some regions of the Republic of Kazakhstan, harvesting of rice and sunflower is still ongoing.
The unusually cold winter and dry summer of 2018 resulted in a 30-40% decrease in the yield of northern winter wheat in Kazakhstan. This has impacted the production and export of wheat, which could have a negative impact on the country’s economy as a whole. Additionally, low yields may lead to an increase in prices of wheat-based products and negatively affect the consumer market. Currently, the Kazakhstani authorities are taking measures to support the agricultural sector and find ways to increase the production of northern winter wheat in the future.
